Family therapy is a form of therapy that focuses on improving relationships and communication within a family.
Being in the comfortable office with the therapist to help guide it allows family members to understand one another better and work through challenges together.
Who it’s for
It is helpful for families, but the question is often, what families? Family therapy is known to help families experiencing transitions, challenges, or conflicts, helping them navigate changes and improve their relationships. Does what my family is experiencing fall under this? You might ask. Here are just examples: changes in schools/grades, being diagnosed, divorce, new part of the family, death, moving, and a big one: my parents don’t listen to me/my kids don’t respect me.
The aim of Family Therapy
Every family is different, but the main goal is to help with understanding. Listed below are a few general goals, but again, every family is different:
*Improve Communication- Family therapy helps members learn to express their thoughts and feelings effectively.
*Resolve Conflicts provides tools and strategies for managing disagreements and finding solutions.
*Strengthen Family Bonds- By fostering understanding and empathy, therapy can help strengthen family relationships.
*Address Specific Issues- It can be used to address issues like substance use, mental health concerns, or behavioral problems.
HOW DOES FAMILY THERAPY WORK
Family therapy allows the family to work together in a “safe” space with someone who is not “judging” them to not only find out what is wrong but also how to meet in the middle. Therapists typically work with the entire family or with specific subsets of family members to understand the dynamics and patterns of interaction. Family therapists often focus on identifying and addressing dysfunctional patterns of communication or behavior. There are different forms of Family Therapy:
* Bowenian Family Therapy: Focuses on individual differentiation and emotional connection within the family system
* Structural Family Therapy: Emphasizes the importance of family structure and boundaries.
*Strategic Family Therapy: Aims to identify and change specific problematic behaviors and interactions.
* Narrative Family Therapy: Focuses on how families create and interpret their stories and experiences.
* Functional Family Therapy (FFT): Aims to improve family interactions and relationship functioning by addressing dysfunctional individual behavior.
BENEFITS
Communicating with family at all times can be difficult, bringing on misunderstandings, changes, death, etc., and it can be even more. In family therapy, you find yourself sitting with your family and a therapist who is not on anyone’s side. That therapist helps everyone see the meaning of the other’s point of view and why meeting in the middle can be beneficial. For example, many children and teens come to therapy stating that their parents “won’t listen” or “don’t understand”. Many parents vent about “mistakes” teens have made. One of the projects that I am focusing on is reminding the parents what it was like when they were that age. If the children are in trouble, try to explain instead of just saying “because I said so”. During sessions, I focus on the family facing and talking to each other, one person at a time and using “I feel”. They are also able to state how they feel about the discussion and why. It is also stated at the beginning that no matter what, nothing said during the sessions is to be held negatively.
* Family therapists are trained specifically for working with families, and as new studies are found, new formalities may also be designed.*
